Often draped in shadows most of the
day the narrow 2,000-foot-deep Black Canyon of the Gunnison was
and is being slowly carved by southwestern Colorado's Gunnison
River. Its walls of schist and gneiss are some of the most imposing
in North America making rock climbers a common sight during spring
and fall. Visitors to this gorge and its rims are often treated
to sitings of black bear, mule deer, golden eagles and peregrine
falcons.
