In
northern Minnesota along the United States border with Canada is
a matrix of more than 900 islands, 30 lakes, and the labyrinth
of narrow waterways that link them. This park is about one-third
water. On the land are some of the oldest rock formations exposed
anywhere in the world. Between the lakes and adjacent rock knobs
and ridges are bogs, marshes, and ponds, which make up a niche
for waterfowl, aquatic animals and plants that exist alongside
the territorial wolf, moose, and bear. This is a tough country
named for the voyagers of times past.
